Saudi Founding Day

February 22 | Governmental

The Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, has issued a royal decree announcing that February 22nd will henceforth be known as Founding Day, to recognize the foundation of the First Saudi State in 1727 by Imam Muhammad bin Saud.

Start of Ramadan

Ramadan is considered one of the holiest months of the year for Muslims. In Ramadan, Muslims commemorate the revelation of the Qur’an, and fast from food and drink during the sunlit hours as a means of drawing closer to God and cultivating self-control, gratitude, and compassion for those less fortunate. Ramadan is a month of intense spiritual rejuvenation with a heightened focus on devotion, during which Muslims spend extra time reading the Qur’an and performing special prayers. Those unable to fast, such as pregnant or nursing women, the sick, or elderly people and children, are exempt from fasting.

Eid Al-Fitr

Eid-al-Fitr is the Muslim holiday marking the end of Ramadan, the Islamic holy month of fasting.  The holiday is often called by the abbreviated name of “Eid” or “Id” (pronounced “eed”) and is celebrated when Ramadan ends.  Eid is celebrated in various ways in different parts of the world, and celebrations usually include special foods, prayers, new clothes, and gifts to those who are poor or in need.

Eid Al-Adha

Eid-ul-Adha or ‘Celebration of Sacrifice’ is also known as the Greater Eid. It is the second most important festival in the Muslim calendar and marks the end of the Hajj, the annual pilgrimage to Makkah (Mecca). It takes place on the 10th day of Dhul-Hijjah, the last month of the Islamic calendar. Although only pilgrims to Makkah can celebrate it fully, Muslims elsewhere also mark the occasion of Eid-ul-Adha.

Saudi National Day

September 23 | Governmental

Saudi National Day is celebrated in Saudi Arabia to commemorate the renaming of the Kingdom of Nejd and Hejaz to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia by royal decree of King Abdul Aziz Al Saud in 1932.

Arabic Language Day

December 18 | Global

The date coincides with the day in 1973 that the General Assembly of the United Nations adopted Arabic as the sixth official language of the Organization. The Arabic language is a pillar of the cultural diversity of humanity. It is one of the most widely spoken languages in the world, used daily by more than 400 million people.
